இல்லா இடத்தும் இயைந்த அளவினால் 

உள்ள இடம்போல் பெரிதுவந்து - மெல்லக் 

கொடையொடு பட்ட குணனுடை மாந்தர்க்கு 

அடையாளம் ஆண்டைக் கதவு.

தன்னிடம் மிகுந்த அளவில் செல்வம் இல்லாவிட்டாலும், போதுமான அளவு செல்வம் இருந்த காலத்தைப் போல, உதவி வேண்டி வருபவர்களின் வருகையால் மகிழ்ந்து, சிறிய அளவிலாவது பிறருக்குக் கொடுத்துதவும் நற்பண்பை உடைய மனிதர்களுக்கு, ஸ்வர்க உலகத்தின் கதவுகள் ஒருபோதும் மூடப்படாது.

நமது செல்வமானது எப்போதும் பெருகிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும் என்று சொல்ல இயலாது. தவறான வழியில் மிகுந்த அளவில் பொருள் சேர்த்தவர்கள்கூட, Demonetization போன்ற எதிர்பாராத நிகழ்வுகளால், சேர்த்த பொருளை இழக்க நேரிடலாம். நேர்மையாகப் பொருளீட்டி, அதைப் பங்குச் சந்தையில் முதலீடு செய்தவர்களின் செல்வமும் கூட, பங்குச் சந்தையில் சரிவு ஏற்பட்டால், மதிப்பில் குறைய வாய்ப்பிருக்கிறது. செல்வாக்கான பதவியில் நீண்டகாலமாக இருப்பவர்கள் கூட, திடீரென்று வேலையைவிட்டு நீக்கப்படலாம். பெருமழையால் வந்த வெள்ளம், நிலநடுக்கம், கடும் வறட்சி போன்ற இயற்கைச் சீற்றத்தால், வீடு, நிலம் போன்றவற்றில் சேர்த்துவைத்த பொருளை இழக்க நேரிடலாம். முறையற்ற கட்டுமானக் குறைபாடுகளால், நெருப்புப் பிடித்து எரிந்தும் கட்டிடங்கள் அழியலாம். எனவே, சேர்த்த செல்வம் என்பது நிலையற்றது.

ஆனால், பொருளுதவியோ அல்லது வேறு ஏதோ ஒரு வகையான உதவியோ தேவைப்படுபவர்கள் எங்கும், எப்போதும் உள்ளனர். அவர்கள் நம்மிடம் வந்து உதவி கேட்கும்பொழுது, நமது தற்போதய நிலை முன்புபோலச் சிறப்பாக இல்லாவிட்டாலும், நம்மால் இயன்ற அளவு, ஏதாவது உதவியை நாம் செய்யவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு, தனது நிலையாக காரணம் கூறாது, சிறிய அளவிலாவது, தன்னலமற்றுப் பிறருக்கு உதவி புரிபவர்களுக்கு, ஸ்வர்கம் / சொர்க்கம் எனப்படும் மரணத்திற்குப் பிந்தைய மேலுலகில், தத்கால் முறையில் இடம் அளிக்கப்படும். அதாவது, சொர்கத்தின் கதவுகள் அவர்களுக்குத் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் திறந்து விடப்படும்.

பி.கு.1 ஆன்மீக சாதகரான ஸ்வாமி, ஸ்வர்கம், நரகம் போன்ற தனிப்பட்ட வேற்று உலகங்கள் மீது நம்பிக்கைகளைக் கொண்டவரல்ல. ஆயினும், பெரும்பாலான மதம் சார்ந்த வழியில் செல்லக்கூடிய மக்கள் அவற்றை நம்புவதால், இல்லாதோருக்கு உதவும் ஈகைத் தன்மையின் பெருமையை எடுத்துக்காட்ட, தற்காலத்து தத்கால் முறையை ஒரு நகைச்சுவையான உதாரணமாகப் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.

கால்தொழில் என்று கருதற்க கையினால்
மேய்தொழில் ஆங்கே மிகும்.

When the preferred type of meat (animal) isn’t available, a hungry tiger, though mighty, will catch and eat a frog. Similarly, when someone gets an opportunity, instead of disrespecting it as if it’s something one can do with the foot, if one sincerely puts effort into the available opportunity, utilising the knowledge gained before, and performs well, some other opportunity, which one may consider as worthy of doing with hands, may happen soon.

Many in the IT services industry - especially those with long term work experience - are suddenly finding themselves being fired or eased out of their position, and are struggling to figure out what to do next. Due to the prevailing political and economical climate, all over the world, getting another similar opportunity immediately will remain a pipe dream for most of them.

So, not unlike the hungry tiger, they should grab any opportunity that comes their way, where they can apply their vast - & hopefully wise - experience, without looking down upon it. If they focus wholeheartedly in doing their best in any available opportunity, they may get a better opportunity soon, through the current opportunity itself.

Instead, if they remain immersed in the past glory of their now non-existent position and keep waiting for something similar, brushing aside other available opportunities as unworthy, then they will become the new examples for the proverb, “A bird in hand is worth two in the bush!”

பொழிந்தினிது நாறினும் பூமிசைதல் செல்லாது

Though the flower holds delicious honey and spreads its fragrance all around, a fly will leave it and eagerly go to where the filth is. Similarly, for those with a tainted or corrupt mind, even the choicest counsel, filled with wonderful insights that provide clarity in life, offered by the wise ones or realised Masters, is of no use.

For a fly that’s stuck with filth - in thought and action - the value of a beautiful, fragrant flower with honey is of no interest or use. Even if someone explains in detail about the flower’s value, the fly won’t change its preference (for the filth). But for the bees, which fly around busily, looking for honey, no one needs to explain the value of the flowers.

People who are totally stuck in materialistic survival are like that fly. The spiritual insights and methods for attaining liberation offered by Realised Masters / Gurus won’t change them in any way. Because, in their mind, things like wealth, success, status, fame of the material life are the most valuable.

Seekers who are traversing the spiritual path are like the bees. They are seeking ways and means to realise the Truth, i.e. attain self-realisation or enlightenment, so it’s not necessary to explain to them the value or importance of a Guru.

Note: That's why, even though Mrs Swamy keeps worrying about those who are not even interested in tasting the nectar of spirituality, Swamy never speaks about spirituality to anyone, on his own.

ஈக்களும் மாக்களும்

பொழிந்தினிது நாறினும் பூமிசைதல் செல்லாது
இழிந்தவை காமுறும் ஈப்போல் - இழிந்தவை
தாம்கலந்த நெஞ்சினார்க்கு என்னாகும் தக்கார்வாய்த்
தேன்கலந்த தேற்றச்சொல் தேர்வு.

தன்னுள் இனிய சுவையுடைய தேனைக்கொண்டு, நறுமணத்துடன் மலர் இருந்தாலும், ஈயானது அதைவிடுத்து, மலம் போன்ற இழிவான பொருட்களையே விரும்பிச் செல்லும். அதுபோல இழிவான மனமுடையவர்களுக்கு, அறிவில் சிறந்த அல்லது ஞானோதயம் அடைந்த பெரியோர்கள் கூறும் இனிமையான, வாழ்வில் தெளிவை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய, தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட நல்ல கருத்துகளால் எந்தப் பயனும் இல்லை.

எப்போதும் மலத்தையே விரும்பி, அதைத் தேடிச் சென்று உழலும் ஈக்கு, அழகான, நறுமணம் மிக்க, தேனை உடைய மலரின் அருமை தெரியாது. அதன் அருமை பற்றி எவ்வளவுதான் எடுத்துரைத்தாலும் அது தனது இழிவான விருப்பத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்ளாது. ஆனால், ஆர்வத்துடன் தேனைத் தேடிச் சுறுசுறுப்பாக அலையும் தேனீக்கு மலரின் அருமை பற்றி யாரும் எடுத்துரைக்கத் தேவையில்லை.

பொருள் சார்ந்த வாழ்வின் மீது மிகுந்த பற்றுடன் இருக்கும் மனிதர்கள் அந்த ஈயைப் போன்றவர்களே. ஞானோதயம் அடைந்த குருமார்கள் கூறும் ஆன்மீகக் கருத்துகளோ, மெய்ஞானம் அடைவதற்கான வழிமுறைகளோ அவர்களிடம் எந்த மாற்றத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தப்போவதில்லை. 

ஆன்மீக வழியில், உண்மையை உணரும் தேடலுடன் செல்லும் சாதகர்களுக்கு, ஒரு குருவின் வழிகாட்டுதலின் அருமை பற்றி யாரும் எடுத்துரைக்கத் தேவையில்லை.

குறிப்பு: இதன்காரணமாகவே, ஆன்மீகம் பற்றிய ஆர்வமே இல்லாதவர்களின் நிலை பற்றித் திருமதி ஸ்வாமி அடிக்கடி வருத்தப்பட்டாலும்கூட, ஸ்வாமி வலியச்சென்று யாரிடமும் ஆன்மீகம் பற்றிப் பேசுவதில்லை.

Akkiya nhoolinum il.

Wonderful religious discourses, the deeper insights offered during such discourses and the holy books or scriptures of a(ny) religion cannot offer liberation (mukthi).

Most humans belong to one religion or another, from the time of their birth (not much of a choice there). Some even switch to a different religion in between. All religions have holy books or scriptures. Wise / holy persons who are well-versed in those tomes in each religion, will offer discourses or sermons on the content of those books or scriptures, covering diverse topics such as liberation, ethics and values, devotion, etc. Based on their knowledge and experience, they may even offer additional interpretations of those ancient tomes. But however good those books or discourses or their explanations are, none of them can actually offer liberation itself.

Self-realisation or realising the Truth of Life is not only a possibility for every human being, it’s also an intensely personal inner experience. Holy books or scriptures and the discourses based on them may at best offer methods or techniques for the realisation or enlightenment in theory but not the experience itself, which is a practical, and deeply personal, experience. That’s why Spirituality is distinct from Religion as the seeking and the ultimate realisation is possible for any human being, irrespective of the religion they belong to or even if they don’t belong to any religion (agnostic).

ஆவேறு உருவின ஆயினும் ஆபயந்த
பால்வேறு உருவின அல்லவாம் - பால்போல்
ஒருதன்மைத் தாகும் அறநெறி ஆபோல்
உருவு பலகொளல் ஈங்கு.

Cows may be of different colours or breeds. But the milk offered by them remains the same - white in colour, irrespective of which colour a cow has on its skin or the breed it belongs to. Truth - the eternal reality known as ParaBrahmam - too is similar.

The paths that lead to the ultimate Truth (& the teachers or Gurus who offer them) may be as different as the many varieties of cows, but the outcome of all the paths - self-realization or liberation or mukthi - is the same, just like the milk of the cows.

பசுக்கள் பல்வேறு நிறத்தில், பல வகைகளைச் சார்ந்தவையாக இருந்தபோதும், அவை தரும் பால் வேறு நிறத்திலோ, வடிவத்திலோ இருக்காது (எல்லாப் பசுக்களின் பாலும் வெண்மையாகவே இருக்கும்). அறமும் - என்றும் நிலையான, பரப்பிரம்மம் எனப்படும் பேருண்மை - அத்தகையதே. அவ்வறத்தை, அதாவது மெய்ஞானத்தை (தனிப்பட்ட அனுபவமாகத் தன்னை உணர்தல்) அடைவதற்கு இருக்கக்கூடிய பலவகையான வழிகள் (யோக முறைகள்) பலவிதமான பசுக்களைப் போன்றவையே.

வழிமுறைகள் மற்றும் அவற்றை வழங்கும் ஆசான்கள் அல்லது குருமார்கள், பசுக்களைப் போல் பல்வேறு விதமாக இருந்தாலும், அவை அனைத்தின் மூலம் கிடைக்கும் பாலானது, மெய்ஞானம் எனப்படும் பேரின்பம் அல்லது வீடுபேறு என்ற விடுதலையே ஆகும்.

NhAladiyAr 400 ~ 135 - What to Learn!

NhAladiyAr ~ 400 verses.. 4 stanzas each..

Thirukkural (1330 verses.. 2 stanzas each) is so well-known that it overshadowed pretty much all the other tomes of equal value. One such, belonging to the same category of ancient Tamil literature of PadhineN KEezhkkaNakku (anthology or logical group of 18 books) group of tomes (பதினெண் கீழ்க்கணக்கு நூல்கள்) is NhAladiyAr (நாலடியார்).

A collection of 400 verses (by various anonymous Poets - considered to be Jain saints), of just 4 stanzas each, it's known for its enchanting use of similes to convey a pertinent point. The 400 verses are grouped under 3 headings (similar to Thirukkural) & 40 subheadings, comprising of 10 verses each.

Long term Swamy readers may recall the “2000 Years Old Tweets” or #2KYOT in digital-natives-lingo Nano blog series in https://swamyverse.blogspot.com, which is on pause for the time being.
Who knows, it may suddenly spring back to life, when some madman like a 3-term CM, who did absolutely nothing to solve a chronic pain that his state still suffers from, during his (& his son's) term, goats about a farcical win in the parliamentary by-election, in which 93% voters Did Not vote & he still got elected with a mere 3% of total votes, and will shamelessly enjoy the free perks of being a member of the Parliament (ah.. the bitter sweetness of the world's largest democracy)!

On the occasion of yet another nondescript day tomorrow (don't even think about it…), Swamy is launching the random Nano blog series that's aimed at bringing such classical treasures to the notice of the intensely competitive insanely fast world that we inhabit today, offering (hopefully.. sincerely) a semblance of sanity, with the ancient lights that can still shine their wisdom light, to shoo away the ignorance darkness that surrounds us like an AR (or is it still VR!) goggle (or ‘IT’, if you're a - strictly Hollywood only - movie fan like Swamy)!

The number of things to be known / learned is innumerable. But the lifetime (to learn them all) is limited / short.

If one ponders / contemplates quietly, even in the limited lifetime, there are many illnesses / diseases that one could be afflicted with (which reduces the available lifetime further).

So, just as a swan would isolate & consume only the milk from a mixture of milk & water, the smart / wise learners (seekers) will choose & learn only those tomes (scriptures) that will aid their quest for a better / more purposeful Life (attain self-realisation / liberation / mukthi).

கற்கக்கூடிய (அ) அறியக்கூடிய விஷயங்கள் கணக்கற்றவை. ஆனால், கற்பவருடைய வாழ்நாள் குறைவானது (அத்தனையும் கற்கப் போதுமானது அல்ல).

சற்றே நிதானமாகச் சிந்தித்தால், அந்தக் குறுகிய வாழும் காலத்தில்கூட, பலவிதமான பிணிகள் (நோய்கள்) வரக்கூடும் (அதனால் வாழ்நாள் இன்னமும் குறுகக்கூடும்).

ஆகையால், இருக்கக்கூடிய எல்லா நூல்களையும் கற்க முயற்சி செய்யாமல், இந்த (குறுகிய) வாழ்நாளுக்குள் தாம் மேன்மையடைய (பெருவீடு பெற / ஞானோதயம் அடைய) எத்தகைய நூல்கள் பயன்படும் என்று தெளிவாக ஆராய்ந்து, நீரிலிருந்து பாலைமட்டும் பிரித்து அருந்தும் அன்னப்பறவை போல, அத்தகைய நூல்களை மட்டுமே அறிவுடையவர்கள் கற்பார்கள்.

Hmmm... It's hard for a book lover (Swamy inclusive) to digest the Truth of verse 135 that's as transparent as glacial meltwater (howzatt for a simile, eh). But since it's undisputed Truth, which remains relevant after millennia, at least Think about it, the next time you pay for a bunch of books, irrespective of whether it's at a beloved (but now defunct) bookstore like Landmark or the ubiquitous Amazon!

Chapter 2 - Greatness of Rain (வான் சிறப்பு) - Kural 15

It has rained like it has never been in Chennai. So much so that people like Swamy who live in Chennai are pinching ourselves today that the Sun is out in all its warm glory and the sky once again is shining in blue hue. 

Swamily had its share of powerless days - despite no life-crippling inundation in their residential area - which continues intermittently, including now, as Swamy writes this post (thank you Luminous Invertor & Exide battery - you're truly life savers)!

As Chennai slowly and painfully swims... umm, limps back to normalcy, cursing both the voluminous downpour that broke many a past record and the administration that continues to struggle but certainly trying to do its best to get the city and its citizens with indomitable spirit back to normal living conditions, it pays to rewind a little over 2000 years to know what Thiruvalluvar said about how precious Rain is!

#15 கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய் மற்றாங்கே 

எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை.

Rain hurts when it doesn't pour and enthralls when it pours.

or

It is Rain that makes Life perish (when it doesn’t pour) or nourishes it (when it pours).

Of course, Namma Chennai makkal may agree to disagree and say it hurts even when it pours - like a double whammy! 

It pays to remember Chennai's usual struggle for water - due to scarcity - in summer, if it doesn't pour like this during monsoon. The problem isn't with rain per se', which has been pouring diligently during every monsoon (with very few exceptions), but with the planners, enforcers and people themselves, who chose to tread roughshod over all the water bodies and channels to divert excess water to them, systematically over the years. 2015 #ChennaiRains is a strong wake up call by mother nature to all - greedy & needy!

Chapter 88 - Knowing the Enemy

The embers of Bihar election heat wave have started cooling down, coinciding with the arrival of monsoon, which as always has inundated most of Chennai. It was a decisive victory for an unlikely coalition of 2 sworn rivals - Nitish & Lalu (both former CMs of the state), who started out in politics together, under a common umbrella & leader, against an autocratic ruler at the centre and the atrocity of that rule called Emergency.

It was also a blow to the ambitious new BJP regime headed by the charismatic leader Modi, who genuinely wants to make this once-great nation great again and his party leader Shah, known for his organizational prowess that brought their party to power at the centre - considered impossible in this nation dotted with selective secularist leaders misleading voters all the time - not too long ago.

Since the threadbare analysis of the viciously fought election is being done by all kinds of glitterati - including the selective secularist elite - on many television channels (most of which spectacularly failed to predict the eventual victory), let's spend our valuable time in understanding what Valluvar has got to say about this kind of scenario, in his epic Thirukkural, a book of 1330 couplets that amazingly are like tweets, written over two millennia ago!

தன்துணை இன்றால் பகையிரண்டால் தானொருவன் 
இன்துணையாக் கொள்வற்றின் ஒன்று.

When you're alone and face two enemies (or opponents), it's better to offer truce to one of them (or make one of them your ally).

Nitish was smart enough to do just that and allied with Lalu, against whom he has fought and won elections in the past. Lalu too was smart enough to accept the truce offered by his rival who took the kursi away from him (& his wife). No one knows how long this uneasy alliance will last (considering the more vocal & naturally dominant Lalu has won more seats than Nitish, whose cleaner image helped him not only win the election but also will ensure his continuity as Bihar CM, as Lalu is barred from contesting elections for a few more years), but pretty much everyone knows how the Bihari bhais got the math right - irrespective of whether either of them even know about Thirukkural or not!

Until united with one of the four families that claim to be hers, Geeta will be more or less Bharat Putri (India's Daughter). It's practically impossible for an anonymous citizen to meet and spend time with the PM, President & a CM who doesn't see eye-to-eye with the PM in a single day - especially after straying away from one's motherland into a not-so-friendly neighbour nation.

So, how should one acquaint such high & mighty, if ever an opportunity presents itself, however incredulous as it may be - like Geeta's triumphant return to her motherland and the seemingly endless felicitation by the powerful beings of the nation?

Since nondescript citizens acquainting the high & mighty has happened all through human history (Kusela & Krishna, Kaudilya & Chandra Gupta, Kavichakravarthi Kamban & Sadayappar, Mahakavi Bharati & Ettayapuram King, Umaruppulavar & Seethakkathi...), it's no wonder that such a sensitive relationship didn't escape the keen eye of Thiruvalluvar.

இகல்வேந்தர்ச் சேர்ந்தொழுகு வார்.

The way to acquaint the powerful is similar to the way one is with small fire created to keep oneself warm out in the cold - neither too close, nor too far.

2KYOT C46 Avoiding Wrong Company K452

The top news items that are all over the media are both about return to motherland of two entirely different citizens for entirely different reasons.

Geeta's return is all about good - not just of Bharat's 'people's choice' government but also of our love-to-hate neighbouring nation's willingness & (rare) cooperation to make her return to motherland happen. 
Rajan's (pending due to formalities) return is all about India's 'decisive' government's quest against all kinds of evil - especially black money kind - and bring the perpetrators of crime under the ambit of the law that (supposedly) applies to all citizens.

Wonder how both stories are connected in more ways than one? As ever, Valluvar has the answer for this citizen conundrum too!

2KYOT C55 - Good Governance - K549

The recent spate of incidents highlighting intolerance of one segment of people towards another, both citizens of the same nation, is a challenge many countries struggle to tackle. Racial hatred and protests continue in the US, long after Lincoln abolished slavery, despite having proudly elected someone from the once-enslaved community as President of the country, not once but twice. Religious hatred and violence prevails in many countries, resulting in preventable loss of human lives and stalling constructive progress necessary to uplift quality of Life.

With the elite intelligentsia returning their government given awards, protesting lack of decisive action from the government/s, media too has raised its already high-decibel pitch a few octaves higher. Here's a tip to the beleaguered government from Thiruvalluvar on its responsibility to act decisively.

549 குடிபுறங் காத்தோம்பிக் குற்றம் கடிதல்

வடுவன்று வேந்தன் தொழில்.

Protecting citizens from violence and punishing perpetrators of violence, without bothering about criticism, is the ruler's responsibility.

President Mukherjee's call against intolerance, Prime Minister Modi's endorsement of & emphasis to follow the same and Maharashtra CM Fadnavis' decisive action to provide protection for the book launch of former foreign minster of a not-so friendly neighbour nation are all steps in the right direction. All governments - including the central - should be as decisive in ensuring safety for freedom of expression and preventing any attempt by anyone to suppress it.
